Daily Devotion: Look to your Leaders

“Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:7-8

We quote Hebrews 13:8 often, but we don’t often connect it to the preceding verse. Reading it in the context of verse 7 brings out the truth in possibly more tangible ways.

If we think of the lives of those who have been leaders for us, who have set an example of faith and spoken the Word of God faithfully to us, we can more clearly see the character and work of Christ. As we look at the work of God in their lives and seek to imitate their faith, we can be encouraged that the same God that worked so powerfully in their lives will do the same in ours.

Our leaders are not perfect, but God has been gracious with them. Our leaders did not always know the right steps to take, but the Lord was sovereign to guide them. They had times of great need and trial that the Lord comforted them in and provided for them during.

We can think through all the twists and turns of their lives and the ways God used them despite their weaknesses and failures and be encouraged in our own walk.

The same Jesus, that saved our leaders from lives of sin, rescued and redeemed them from their addictions, used them, provided for, encouraged, and comforted them, is the same one that saves and redeems us and will see us through to the end.

We serve and are loved by the same God that parted the Red Sea and raised Lazarus to life. In the same way, we serve and are loved by the same God that we have heard stories about from our leaders, pastors, mentors, etc.

Look at the work of God in the lives of His saints throughout the Bible and those that you know personally and take joy and courage from the fact that the same Christ works in you. What He has done for them, He will do for you. He is faithful and consistent, always and forever. He does not change.
